Sims 4 Dev Q&A: Auto-Save, Memory Boost, and September Plans
One week before the release of the July update, the developers of The Sims 4 held a special question-and-answer session in the official Discord server. Producer Morgan, designer Conor, and engineer Mike answered players' questions about the upcoming patch. The main topics were the long-awaited auto-save, memory optimization for all platforms, and a fix for the roof bug. The developers also lifted the veil on plans for the September update, which will focus on improving Sim autonomy.
In a separate article, we already covered in detail how auto-save and save reminders work, as well as told about the reaction of modders to this feature. And in this material, you'll find a full breakdown of the Q&A session itself and the developers' answers to community questions.
Auto-Save and Save Reminders: Details from the Developers
The main topic of the Q&A was the new save system. Players asked how exactly it would work and how flexible the settings would be.
How the auto-save slot is created. Producer Morgan confirmed that auto-save will create a separate slot, without affecting the player's manual saves. This allows you to return to your last manual save point at any time if auto-save saved the wrong moment. Save reminders, on the other hand, will save over the last manual slot, as if the player had saved manually.
Auto-save settings. Players will be able to choose when exactly the game should create save points: after moving between lots, after a certain amount of time has passed, or at important in-game milestones. This feature will be available on PC, Mac, and consoles. PC and Mac players can completely disable auto-save, while console players will only be able to adjust the frequency.
Build Mode. An important clarification: auto-save works even in Build Mode. As Morgan noted, this was one of the most common requests, as many players spend hours building houses.
Funny gnomes. Save reminders will appear as messages from gnomes. Conor, the game designer, wrote different variations of these messages, and according to Morgan, they turned out to be very funny.
Memory Optimization: What Will It Give Players?
The second important block of questions concerned Memory Boost — a feature that was previously only available on PC in early access mode and will now appear on all platforms. Players were interested in what exactly would change and how it would affect their saves.
How it works. Memory Boost improves memory management in the game, which should provide a smoother experience with less lag, improved frame rates, shorter loading times, and a reduced risk of memory-related crashes.
Help with corrupted saves. One of the most important questions was whether Memory Boost can open previously corrupted saves. The developers confirmed that during experiments, the feature did allow some saves that were previously considered corrupted to be opened. However, they warned that this is not a panacea and depends on the specific cause of the problem.
Compatibility. Previously, there was a limitation that Memory Boost only worked on DirectX 11. The developers confirmed that this limitation is being lifted — the feature will also be available on DirectX 9.
Disabling the feature. Unlike the PC version, where Memory Boost could be manually enabled or disabled, with the release of the update the feature will become mandatory for all players. It cannot be turned off.
Nordhaven: New Notification Toggle
In addition to the major changes, the developers added a small but useful detail — a new toggle for notifications about interest group meetings in Nordhaven. Previously, players could only manage these alerts through in-game information boards in the world itself, which was not always convenient. Now, a separate toggle for Nordhaven meetings will appear in the settings menu, similar to those recently added for festivals in other worlds.
This change continues the developers' course of customizing the information flow in the game, which began with the June update. As producer Morgan noted during the Q&A, such toggles are very simple to implement if the notifications already exist in the game. Interest group meetings in Nordhaven are a great way for Sims to find like-minded individuals and develop skills, but not all players need constant reminders about them, and the new toggle gives the opportunity to easily turn off alerts without giving up the content itself.
Bug Fixes: Roofs and Rental Housing
Players couldn't help but ask about the roof bug that appeared in the June update and caused a lot of trouble for builders. Morgan confirmed that the fix will be included in the July 21 patch and will work in old saves.
Rental housing and corrupted lots. The developers also tested reports of corrupted lots in saves with a large number of rental housing units. With Memory Boost enabled, the issue no longer reproduces on any of the tested saves. Morgan noted that the team did extensive testing and is confident in the safety of using a normal number of rental properties (by default, about 8 per save).
Other Important Questions and Future Plans
Saving in CAS. A player asked why you can't save the game while editing a character. Engineer Mike explained that CAS and Build Mode use different save processes, so implementing this feature is technically difficult.
Game speed on 3x. Players were concerned about whether Memory Boost would help with lag at maximum speed. Morgan replied that the feature was not specifically tested for this problem, but if players notice improvements, it will help the team in further research.
Upcoming updates. The developers confirmed that they are already working on an update to the food and drink system, as well as improving Sim autonomy. The next major "Quality of Life" update is scheduled for September and will focus on Sim behavior in everyday situations.
The developers also added three new color swatches for the YumCooker stove from the City Living expansion. This was done to bring it in line with the updated version of the same stove from the base game, which received new colors in one of the previous patches. While this is a small change, it improves the visual consistency of items and gives players more options for designing loft-style kitchens.
The Q&A session showed that the developers are listening closely to the community and are preparing to release one of the most important updates of the year. Auto-save, memory optimization, and the long-awaited roof fix are not just fixes — they are fundamental improvements that should make the game more stable and comfortable.
