Auto-Save in Sims 4: How the New Feature Works, Settings, and Modder Reactions
One of the most long-awaited features in the history of The Sims 4 is finally becoming a reality. In the update releasing on July 21, 2026, the developers will introduce an auto-save system and save reminders. Players have been asking for this feature for years, and it will now be available on all platforms — PC, Mac, and consoles.
Earlier, we already covered the July Laundry List in detail and wrote about other new features in this update.
How Does Auto-Save Work in The Sims 4?
Auto-save will run in the background, automatically creating save points at key moments during gameplay.
How it will work:
Auto-save creates a separate save slot, without affecting your manual saves. This means you can always return to your last manual save point if the auto-save saved the wrong moment.
In the game settings, you can choose when auto-save should occur:
- After traveling between lots;
- After a certain amount of time has passed (for example, every 15, 30, or 60 minutes);
- At important in-game milestones.
The save process is accompanied by an on-screen notification, so you'll always know when the game has created a save point.
Save Reminders: A Friendly Nudge from Gnomes
Alongside auto-save, a reminder feature will also be added. If you prefer to save manually but often forget, the game will remind you with a frequency of your choice.
Reminder features:
— Reminders can be customized or turned off completely.
— Notifications appear as funny messages from gnomes. As producer Morgan noted in the Q&A: "They've got different variants of what the gnome will say. I think they're hilarious. They've got like 'Press the Red Button' vibes."
— Reminders save over your last manual save, unlike auto-save which creates a separate slot.
Customization for Your Play Style
The main advantage of the new system is its flexibility. The developers understand that each player approaches saving differently.
For builders: auto-save works even in Build Mode.
For storytellers: you can set auto-save to trigger at key story moments.
For perfectionists: you can save manually, turn off auto-save, or leave only reminders.
For console players: consoles will receive an improved version of auto-save.
What Was Used Before Official Auto-Save?
For years, players had to rely on third-party mods to protect their progress. The most popular solutions were:
MC Command Center (Deaderpool). One of the most downloaded mods for The Sims 4, which included an auto-save feature. MCCC allowed you to set the interval between saves and create multiple slots. For many players, this mod was the only protection against progress loss.
WickedWhims (Turbodriver). The popular adult mod also included an auto-save feature. The mod's creator, Turbodriver, even reacted to the news of the official feature — he posted a funny picture on X hinting that the "feature in his mod had died." In the comments, players were sadly saying goodbye to the feature, remembering how many times it had saved them from losing progress.
SimMattically's Quick Save Mod. Another mod that added quick saving with a key press and customizable save reminders. With the release of the official feature, these mods will likely lose their relevance, at least regarding auto-saving.
The community reaction to the news was warm. Players on social media expressed joy that they "finally won't have to rely on mods for a basic feature."
Losing progress in The Sims 4 has been one of the most common reasons for player frustration. Game crashes, corrupted saves, or simple forgetfulness could cost dozens of hours of work on a house or a family's life.
The new auto-save and save reminders are designed to solve this problem. The developers have also confirmed that the auto-save system can help in some cases of save corruption.
"I would recommend enabling this feature, and after this update, it will be enabled by default," said producer Morgan during the Q&A session.
The auto-save and reminder system is not just a new button in the menu. It's a fundamental improvement to the gameplay experience that should make the game more comfortable and less stressful. After 12 years of The Sims 4's existence, players are finally getting a feature that should have been in the game from the start. Even popular mod creators are humorously acknowledging that their time in this area has passed.
