The Sims 4 developers unexpectedly released a teaser trailer in which they announced a new wave of free content for the base game. The video showcases new items for Create-a-Sim and Build Mode, including hairstyles, clothing, furniture, and even an aquarium. The content will be added gradually: the first batch will arrive at the end of August, and the rest later this year. And, most importantly, everything will be available through a free base game update, not through the Marketplace.

Earlier, we wrote about free creator sets in the Marketplace, as well as brand collaborations.

What Was Shown in the Trailer?

The video, published on August 11, lasts less than a minute but manages to showcase a number of new items. The entire content is divided into several thematic blocks.

Free Clothing for Adult Sims

In the "All Sizes Are Sims Sizes" section, new outfits for adult characters are shown. Among them are a sequin top, pants, a polo, and shorts. Special attention was drawn to the sequin top, which, according to developer comments, is part of a new "plus-size" clothing line.

Free Content for Children in Sims 4

The largest block of new items is dedicated to children. The "Every Age Has A Story" section shows:

  • Wall decals
    • New dresses and blouses
      • Glasses
        • A dining table and chairs
          • Hairstyles

New Build Mode Items in Sims 4

In the final block, "Build Your Base," the developers showed many new objects for Build Mode:

            • A children's aquarium
              • Decor items
                • New beds and sofas
                  • Curtains
                    • Lights

Free Content — A Gift for The Sims' 12th Anniversary?

The game was released on September 2, 2014, and in 2026 it turns 12 years old. Apparently, the free content announcement is a gift to fans for this occasion. The first wave of new items is coming at the end of August, just a few days before the anniversary, which perfectly fits the tradition of pleasing players before the simulator's birthday. This explains why the developers decided to release so many new items at once, without tying them to any specific expansion or event.

When to Expect and Where to Download?

The main question left after watching the trailer is the release date. The video itself doesn't specify it, but the game's community manager, Mindy, shed some light on the details in the official The Sims Discord server.

The first wave of free content will start rolling out to players at the end of August. It will include:

                      • Plus-size clothing
                        • Star hairstyles

The rest of the items shown in the trailer will appear later this year.

Important clarification: Mindy confirmed that all this content will be delivered through a free base game update, not through the Marketplace. This is an important distinction, given the community's mixed feelings about the platform.

Community Reaction to The Sims 4 Free Content

The news about the free content sparked a lively discussion. Some players are genuinely happy about the new items, especially since they are free and available to everyone. Others expressed skepticism: some players are tired of cosmetic updates and would like to see new gameplay mechanics.

In the comments on the Sims Community article, one user wrote:

"Tired of getting cosmetic updates like CAS or build/buy items. I want new bug-free functioning gameplay items."

                          Another added:

"I don't know why they're advertising unfinished free content. Numbers must have fallen off a clip after the buyout."

Nevertheless, many positively appreciated the very fact of free content: "I'm very excited and happy about this for Sims 4 users that doesn't use a lot of packs this is a lot of good stuff."

The announcement of free content is good news for all base game owners. The new items will help diversify wardrobes and interiors without needing to buy expansions. It's especially nice that the developers are focusing on inclusivity by adding clothing for different body types.

On the other hand, the lack of gameplay new items and the continuation of "free drops" instead of full expansions confirm that Sims 4 has entered a phase of support without major releases. Nevertheless, even such updates remain an important gesture toward the community, especially amid rumors of a possible subscription model for Project X.
