The Sims 4 May 2026 Update: Infant Overhaul, Base Layers, Save Backups, and Bridgerton Event
On May 12, 2026, one of the most significant technical updates in The Sims 4's history was released. Patch version 1.124.54.1030 (PC) / 1.124.54.1230 (Mac) / 2.33 (Console) includes over 150 fixes, completely overhauls the Infant care system, adds the long-awaited Base Layers to Create a Sim, and improves the save backup system. The developers also launched a free login rewards event in celebration of the collaboration with the Netflix series Bridgerton.
A Revolution in Infant and Toddler Care
The developers have completely overhauled interactions with the youngest Sims, guided by community feedback. These changes are designed to make raising children less chaotic and more enjoyable.
Key Improvements
Endless "pick up/put down" loops have been stopped – Sims will no longer constantly pick up and immediately put down an Infant.
Instant cleanup – After changing a diaper, Sims will immediately dispose of the dirty diaper in the nearest trash can.
Fixed an issue where the "First Time at Daycare" milestone wasn't showing up on the Sim's information panel. It is now available for both Toddlers and Teens. Did you even know that milestone existed?
Care speed – Feeding and diaper changing have become significantly faster, and Infant hunger decays more slowly.
New playmat – A base game "Lil’Wiggle Playmat" with 9 swatches, including a sheep pattern. Sims will now prefer to place Infants on it rather than on the floor.
Caregiver autonomy toggle – A new option in Settings allows you to disable autonomous Infant care (players will need to direct actions manually).
Progress and milestones – The "Tummy Time" Infant milestones now take half as long to achieve, and milestones no longer reset when switching households. Skills learned by Infants now also function correctly on other lots.
The "Pull to Stand" milestone issue has also been resolved. The developers added a tooltip clarifying that a crib is required for this milestone to work.
All these changes are intended to make Infant interactions smoother and more predictable, while also freeing up time for your Sims to do other things.
Base Layers: A New Era of Customization in CAS
A new "Base Layers" category has been added to Create a Sim (located in Accessories), functioning similarly to tights but for the upper body. It allows you to create more realistic and diverse looks without relying on third-party mods.
8 options for Adults, 4 for Children, and 2 for Toddlers, featuring various sleeve lengths and styles. This results in over 380 swatches that can be combined with any clothing or worn on their own. Items in this category can be layered under any top or outfit and will show through sheer clothing.
Save Backup: Protecting Your Stories
Previously, the game would automatically create backup copies of only the last five sessions. Now, the system is much more robust.
More versions available – You can now restore saves not only from the last session, but also from a day, week, and month ago.
How to use – From the Main Menu, select "Load Game," then click the "Recover Save" button to see more available backups.
These changes protect long‑term families and progress from loss due to bugs or file corruption.
Autonomy Improvements: Annoying Sim Behaviors Fixed
Numerous fixes address Sim behaviors that have irritated players for years.
Sims will no longer endlessly drink water from sinks (the hidden thirst motive has been removed). This also stops NPCs from coming into your house to do so. Some players have complained that this solution doesn't sit right with them: "completely removing a Sim's thirst motive is strange."
Dancing – Sims now dance far less often (no more than once a day).
Sleeping – Sims woken up by a blaring TV or radio will now turn it off themselves and go back to sleep. An exhausted Sim who makes it to bed will no longer pass out next to it.
The Jealousy trait has been fixed, eliminating the illogical behavior where a Sim with this trait would get jealous of their own children.
Sleeping as a couple – A bug where Sims would constantly get out of bed has been fixed.
Other Key Fixes Not to Be Missed
"Black Photos" – Six different fixes have been implemented to address the main causes of missing textures on photos and paintings. All known cases have been resolved at this time.
Royalty & Legacy Grand Ball Dress Code – Sims will now attend Balls in outfits matching the specified dress code.
A new "Sleep and Cuddle" interaction has been added, and the issue of Sims waking prematurely when cuddling has been fixed.
Shame and Scandals – A bug causing the "Secret Witness" Sentiment to appear for married couples after WooHoo has been fixed.
You can view the full list of changes on the official EA website. These fixes resolve many long‑standing issues that have been piling up for years.
