Sims 4 Dev Q&A: Infants, Base Layers, Backup Saves, and Black Photo Fix

On the evening of May 5 (or early morning of May 6 Moscow time), The Sims 4 developers held a special Q&A session on the official Discord server dedicated to the upcoming Quality of Life Update. The team — Morgan, Conor, Cade, and Solaire — spent nearly two hours answering player questions, covering everything from Infant improvements and new Base Layers to Gallery issues, autonomy, and even eyelids. Here's your full recap of the marathon.

Earlier, on May 5, the "Laundry List" was published detailing over 150 fixes, and on May 6 (today) a live Twitch stream will showcase the main new features. The update itself goes live on May 12, 2026.

Infants: No More Pick‑Up/Put‑Down Loops and Freezing

The main topic of the Q&A was the complete overhaul of Infant behavior. Developers admitted the old systems were "super interconnected and tricky to untangle" and spent a huge amount of effort unraveling them. Morgan called it the hardest part of the update:

"Honestly, posture‑related fixes were 100% the hardest part of this update – pick up and put down for Infants. It's REALLY interconnected with a lot of states an Infant can be put into."

What was fixed (and how it works, according to the devs):

Pick‑up/put‑down loops. Sims will no longer endlessly pick up and immediately put down Infants. Conflicts where multiple adults tried to care for an Infant simultaneously and got in each other's way have been eliminated.

Freezing during care interactions. Actions now complete much faster without lag.

"Check Infant" – this interaction is now far less intrusive. Morgan explained: "It still happens with Caregiver autonomy on, because we want caregivers to check on the Infants, but it happens much less frequently and is far less intrusive now. I'm really pleased with how it's working."

Canceling "Check Infant". If the interaction is next in the queue, you can now cancel it. If it's further back, you cannot – that proved too difficult to fix – but Morgan noted that the desire to cancel happens much less often now.

Feeding, diapers, cleanup. Diaper changes are faster, and dirty diaper cleanup happens either immediately after or a little later, but overall "much snappier."

When asked if any other new items for Infants would be added besides the playmat, EA Cade replied: "Just the playmat (and its variations)."

A crucial addition is the new option to disable caregiver autonomy. This setting turns off automatic Infant care for everyone – both active household and NPCs. Conor confirmed: "With caregiving disabled, it's off for everyone – Household and NPC."

Also fixed: Infant needs no longer decay while you're on another lot.

Base Layers: 350+ Variants and No "Stacking Tops"

The second major feature is the addition of Base Layers in Create‑a‑Sim. Developers explained how it works:

Where to find them. Base Layers are a separate category in Accessories, functioning exactly like tights. They are worn under tops or full‑body outfits.

Compatibility. They work 100% with all tops and full‑body assets from all packs.

Count. Counting all variants for Toddlers, Children, and Teens/Adults, there are around 350 swatches. Morgan noted: "But the real magic is how these assets can all be combined with different assets from different packs."

What you cannot do. You cannot layer one top over another. Base Layers are exactly that – a base layer. Only one top or full‑body outfit goes over them.

When asked whether Base Layers would be added to future packs, Morgan said that for now all new items are only in the Base Game, but they could be added in future releases if desired.

In response to a request for a GIF showing the new layers, the developers posted several animations showcasing combinations.

Black Photos and Other Long‑Awaited Fixes

Developers confirmed that all known issues with black photos will be resolved in this update. Cade stated: "This update will address ALL currently known issues with black photos. Please continue to report any that you come across!"

Other fixes:

Gallery sorting will revert to "Newest" by default.

The issue of townies entering your home to drink water will only be fixed in new saves. Morgan warned: "In old games, I don't think there's anything you can do to stop it from happening, unfortunately." However, the autonomous water drinking by active household Sims is fixed in all saves.

Sims woken up by a TV or radio will now turn off the device and go back to sleep – Conor showed a GIF and said he'd wanted to add this feature for a while.

Noble titles for children of Noble Sims (from the Royalty & Legacy pack) will now be correctly assigned at birth – the bug is on the fix list.

Backup Saves: Weekly and Monthly Versions Now Stored

One of the most interesting features for legacy players is the improved backup save system. Previously, the game only kept the last 5 play sessions. Now, according to Morgan:

"We're keeping around more old versions of the saves – keeping week and month old versions. We'll also be showing this off in the livestream towards the end!"

So if you accidentally overwrite an important save or a bug appears later, you'll have a chance to roll back to an earlier version.

Autonomy, Future Updates, and the "Hardest Fixes"

Developers confirmed that work on autonomy is just the beginning. Morgan said: "We know that autonomy is a top player request, so it's something we've REALLY been focusing on. This update has some really nice updates for autonomy, as do our plans for the next update." They are already starting to discuss an update focused on food, dining, and drinks.

What was the hardest thing to fix? Two answers emerged:

Eyelids – Cade stated almost without irony: "EYELIDS!" The blinking and incorrect eye‑closing issue turned out to be incredibly complex, partly due to eyelashes (from the Lovestruck pack).

Infant postures – Morgan reiterated that the entire Infant posture system was a nightmare.

Low repro rate bugs – Conor added that bugs which are hard to reproduce are also very difficult to fix.

Testing and "Casualties": No Sims Were Harmed

On testing, Morgan said the team does extensive testing, and for this update they ran additional weekly playtests to assess Infant behavior.

Regarding famous test Sims: Solaire admitted that Eliza Pancakes died more times than she cares to admit, while Morgan assured: "No Sims were caught in a massive, destructive fire in the making of this patch."

Favorite test characters:

  • Ron Lumberjackson for Morgan.
    • The cheap seaside lot in Brindleton Bay for Conor.
      • The Pancakes family as guinea pigs for Solaire.

The update goes live on May 12, 2026. Today, May 6, at 7 PM CET an official Twitch livestream will showcase Base Layers, Infant improvements, and the new backup save options.

The full list of 150+ fixes will be published on patch day, along with modder‑friendly patch notes.
