In a fresh insider report from a source who has previously shared accurate information about EA's development plans, an interesting detail has emerged about the future of The Sims Project X. According to the source, the company is considering making pets free in the new project while actively monetizing cosmetic items for them. This is just one item on a list of changes being prepared for the franchise following the completion of the EA buyout deal.

Free Pets Through Cosmetics: EA's New Strateg

One of the most discussed topics in the new leak is the future of pets. The insider claims that in Project X, pets could become part of the base game, unlike in The Sims 4 where they required a separate Cats & Dogs expansion pack.

"EA wants to make pets free for Project X so they can monetize cosmetics for them. The idea is that people might think, 'Well, since the pets are free, I don't mind buying individual outfits for my cat on the Marketplace.'"

This approach has already been tested with The Sims 4's My First Pet Stuff pack, which, contrary to popular belief, the insider says was not a flop at all, but rather a "big seller." The lesson learned: players do want to buy additional content for their pets, but it's important that it doesn't feel like it was "cut out" of the main expansion.

However, this strategy could be risky. Offering free pets in Project X could be a powerful marketing move, especially given that they were paid content in The Sims 4. However, aggressive monetization through microtransactions and the Marketplace risks alienating a community that has already reacted negatively to the introduction of Moola currency and paid user-generated content.

Tension in the Sims: AI, Buyout, and "Financial Guarantees"

The insider also shed light on the internal atmosphere at the studio following the EA buyout. According to the source, Maxis developers are under significant strain. The main reason is the company's new focus on maximum monetization, leading to many ideas being rejected if they "don't fit the profit strategy."

Key points:

AI usage. Sims 4 developers aren't yet being forced to use AI, but since that game serves as the "base" for Project X, many improvements to the fourth installment automatically become part of the work on the new project. This creates a double-edged feeling: Maxis is glad they can improve Sims 4 in the process, but staff working on X are in a "less happy" position.

Project review. Following the buyout, EA is reviewing all its projects, including Project Rene and Project X, from a financial return perspective. Anything that doesn't promise "huge profits" could be canceled, reworked, or must be re‑approved. "Everything's on the board — from cancellation to reworking," the insider notes.

These findings suggest EA is focused less on creative execution and more on finding the most profitable business models, which aligns with other leaks about a possible subscription model for Project X. The company appears to be looking for a way to turn the franchise into a stable, high‑revenue service, and making pets free is part of that plan.

The new leak paints a picture of a franchise at a crossroads. On one hand, EA is willing to take unprecedented steps like offering free pets to attract audiences. On the other, all decisions are driven by strict financial logic, causing tension within the studio and concern among fans. The future of Project X (and Project Rene) now depends on whether they are approved by EA's new owners. Players can only speculate what this "new era" of The Sims will look like — generous with base features or aggressive in monetization.
