If you're playing The Sims 4 without mods, you're playing a completely different game. Talented creators from the community patch up shortcomings day after day, add realism, and come up with mechanics that EA hasn't even thought about yet. We've put together a selection of mods that will make your game cozier, more engaging, and more alive – from small quality-of-life tweaks to genuine gameplay revelations.

Object Deterioration by adeepindigo

Items in The Sims 4 will finally start showing their age: the mod introduces gradual wear and tear on objects through regular use, neglect, or deliberate damage. A cheap sofa falls apart faster than an expensive one, an old fridge does a worse job of keeping food fresh, and a run-down bed won't give your sim a decent night's sleep anymore. Keep an eye on the condition of your belongings and clean or repair them in time – otherwise one day they'll simply break down for good and need to be replaced.

Base Layer Update by ikari sims

A great addition to one of the game's recent updates, expanding the new base layer clothing category with more variety to choose from.

Searchable Recipes by TwistedMexi

Tired of scrolling through an endless list of recipes trying to track down a specific dish? Searchable Recipes adds a search bar to all food and drink menus: just start typing the name and the mod will find the recipe for you. It even works with custom recipes from other mods and CC – a real lifesaver if you've got a large collection.

Tiered Dining: Price Multipliers + Water is Not Free by SonozakiSisters

With Tiered Dining, every restaurant in the game finally gets its own price tier: through lot challenges, you can set a x5 markup for a casual spot or x10 for a fine dining establishment. Hardcore fans can stack both challenges at once and really hit their sims where it hurts – right in the wallet. And yes, water costs money now too, just as it should in any self-respecting restaurant.

Functional Aprons Mod by Tinycoffeecups

Want cooking in The Sims to feel truly cozy and realistic? This mod lets Sims put on aprons straight from the wall hook in the base game – for adults, teens, and children alike. Add the optional add-ons and your Sims' clothes will get dusted with flour, splattered with oil, or smeared with paint while cooking and crafting. Perfect for storytelling and atmospheric screenshots. It all washes off in the shower or at the sink, provided you install yet another optional file.

Play Laptop On The Ground by Cepzid Ferdiana Creation

Remember how in The Sims 3, sims could sit on the floor with their laptop? Let's bring that charming little detail back to the fourth installment! Simply place the laptop in your Sim's inventory, select the right interaction, and there they are – parked on the floor with their computer. A lovely little touch for a college-dorm vibe or just a lazy night in.

TS3 Age Up by tyjokr

A mechanic from The Sims 3 makes its return – now the right to choose a trait when aging up has to be earned. It all comes down to how well your sim performed during the previous life stage: straight-A students get to pick their own trait, while underachievers will just have to take whatever the game throws at them.

Put Away Leftovers by deadlystingnyc

You know how it goes: a sim cooks a whole pot of food, everyone eats and goes their separate ways, and the dish just sits on the table until the end of time. Put Away Leftovers fixes exactly that: every 30 minutes the mod scans the lot and sends one of the household members to put the leftovers away in the fridge. Neat sims get first dibs, while slobs are conveniently let off the hook – just like in real life.

Assign Guest Bed by SonozakiSisters

A small but incredibly handy mod for anyone who loves throwing parties or having Sims over for the night: Assign Guest Bed lets you manually assign a bed or sleeping bag to your guests. Just Shift+click the bed, pick the Sim you want from the list, and say goodbye to the chaos of everyone scrambling for the same spot. Works with any Sim currently on the lot who isn't part of the household.
