Motive: Mortimer Goth is the wealthiest sim in Pleasantview. With Bella out of the picture, Dina could make a move on his fortune.
Means: The sisters' alien bloodline gave them access to the technology needed to orchestrate an abduction.
Opportunity: This is where it gets interesting. In-game memories reveal that Dina and Don were also having a secret fling behind Nina's back. When Nina finds out, she is furious.
The plan was ingenious:
- Don distracts and seduces Cassandra Goth (Bella's daughter), getting engaged to her
- While Cassandra is emotionally occupied with Don, Dina is free to woo the widowed Mortimer

Don lives in an abandoned barn, which the McDermott family likely gave him after he materialized in their garden. Interestingly, in The Sims 3: University Life, Don is the author of a book titled "Social Networking Vol. 2: Cyber-Stalking and You". Very on-brand for him.
